In brief

  • Five things set the price of a remote data engineering team: seniority, engagement shape, scope, overlap hours and support. Geography adjusts the number; it does not set it.
  • The India cost difference comes mostly from what a lean remote consultancy is not paying for: offices in expensive cities, account-management layers, idle bench capacity and a brand premium. Senior engineers in India are not cheap.
  • Compare quotes on the same scope, seniority and support, then add your own management, onboarding, access and documentation time before deciding which is cheaper.

Search for the cost of an offshore data team in India and the first answer is usually a single hourly number. It is rarely the price you pay, because it leaves out who does the work and what happens after the build.

What determines the price of a remote data engineering team?

Five variables set the price: seniority, engagement shape, scope, overlap hours and support. A quote that gives a number without stating all five is a guess with a currency symbol in front of it.

  • Seniority. A senior engineer who designs the model, writes the checks and reviews others' work costs more per hour than a mid-level engineer building to a specification, and usually less per finished outcome.
  • Engagement shape. Hourly time, a retainer for a named person, a pod of a lead plus two or three engineers, or a fixed-scope project each price differently. See the engagement-model comparison.
  • Scope. Source count, access complexity, historical volume, transformation rules, freshness requirements and how many dashboards depend on the result.
  • Overlap hours. A standard Indian working day already covers most of the UK and European morning. Covering US mornings means shifting the team's day; a full US afternoon is unrealistic in a normal week. The timezone overlap guide gives realistic windows.
  • Support. Build-and-hand-over is one price. Monitoring, maintenance, named out-of-hours response and agreed fix times are another, and should be written down.

Why is a team in India cheaper, and where does the saving come from?

The difference comes from structure, not cheap labour. A lean remote consultancy is not paying for offices in expensive cities, account-management layers between you and the engineers, idle bench capacity or a brand premium, and it passes that structural difference through to the quote.

Pay does differ by country, and the benchmarks below show how much. But a consultancy's rate is not its engineers' salary: it also covers employer costs, tooling, non-billable review time, the gap between hours worked and hours sold, and margin. A quote that looks like a salary divided by working hours is leaving something out or describing a different level of engineer.

What do public benchmarks say about data engineering rates?

Published figures put independent US consulting firms at $100 to $325 an hour depending on seniority, nearshore teams at $45 to $95, and senior data engineer pay in India at $19,000 to $37,000 a year against $180,000 or more in the US. Treat them as a sanity check, not a price list.

Sources: bdemerson.com, data engineering consulting rates; secondtalent.com, cost to hire a data engineer; wisemonk.io, cost of an offshore data foundation team in India. All three are vendor-published, and none of the figures above is an India consulting rate.

Three different things are measured here: consultancy billing rates, freelance rates and employee salaries, and they are not interchangeable. The India rows are pay, not what a consultancy charges, and the Southeast Asia band is a different region. Seniority moves the number as much as geography does.

How do you compare offshore, nearshore and onshore quotes like for like?

Put every quote on the same basis: the same written scope, the same named seniority, the same overlap window and the same support terms, then convert each to a monthly cost at the capacity you will actually use. An hourly rate on its own compares nothing.

  1. Fix the scope in writing and send the same document to every vendor.
  2. Ask who, by name and level. "A senior engineer" means little until you know whether that person designs the model or only builds to it.
  3. State the overlap window in your local time and ask each vendor to price it. Nearshore may win on overlap and lose on seniority; India may be the reverse.
  4. List what is included: testing, reconciliation against today's numbers, documentation, handover, monitoring and post-launch fixes.
  5. Convert to a monthly figure at the hours you will use, including minimum commitments, ramp-up and notice terms.

The twelve questions to ask before hiring a remote data consultancy turn this into a checklist to send with the brief.

Which costs do buyers forget?

The four costs that rarely appear in a quote are your own management time, onboarding, access and documentation. They exist in every delivery model and are larger when the team is remote, so they belong in the comparison.

  • Management time. Someone on your side makes decisions, answers questions and reviews work.
  • Onboarding. The first two to four weeks are slower: environment set-up, reading existing code, learning which numbers people trust.
  • Access. Accounts, VPN, repositories, warehouse roles and SaaS tools take time from your IT and security teams.
  • Documentation. If it is not in the quote, it will either not exist or be written by you. Runbooks, source-to-target mappings and recovery notes are what let you change vendors later.

How does MV.tech price a remote data engineering team?

Pricing is agreed per engagement, and we quote after a scoping call. The model is lean and remote, which keeps office and management overhead low, so compare the quote on agreed scope, senior delivery time, validation, handover and support. The call covers the problem, the source systems, the target warehouse or BI tools, the timeline and the overlap window; a sanitised example is enough and credentials are not needed for an enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Is an hourly rate or a monthly pod cheaper for data engineering work?

It depends on how steady the work is. Hourly suits short or uncertain work and part-time specialists. A monthly pod or retainer usually costs less per hour for continuous work, but commits you to that capacity whether or not the backlog fills it. Convert both to a monthly figure at the hours you will really use.

Is an offshore team in India cheaper than a nearshore team?

Usually, at the same seniority, yes, but none of the figures above is an India consulting rate, so test it against your own quotes. The gap narrows once you add the overlap hours a US client may need. Nearshore teams often win on shared working hours; India-based teams often win on senior engineering cost.

Why is there no rate card on this page?

Because a rate without the seniority, scope, overlap and support attached would mislead more than it informs. We quote after a scoping call so the number reflects the actual work and the named people doing it.
